Quick Contributions
Donations
You can easily donate online with options to contribute once, monthly, or annually. If you would prefer to send us a check, please make the check payable to Mountain Watershed Association and mail to PO Box 408 Melcroft, PA 15462.
Employer Match
Many employers offer a donation match for employees’ donations made to nonprofit organizations. Check with your employer’s HR representative to see if your donation could be amplified.
Business Sponsorships
We appreciate the support of local businesses and companies that share our vision of protecting clean water and healthy communities! Sponsor specific events, like the Yough Defense Party, or support community activities, like the Indian Creek Watershed Festival or litter cleanups on the river.
Planned Giving
Gifts of Stock
A donation of appreciated stock is a way to support MWA with added benefits to you. There are three types of stock that can be donated to nonprofits: publicly-traded stocks, privately-held stocks, and mutual funds. Donating stock can allow donors to avoid both capital gains and state income taxes you would otherwise need to pay. Donors can claim a charitable deduction for the current fair market value of their stock at the time of donation. Together, these benefits can represent significant tax savings for donors.
Gifts from an IRA
If you are 70 (and a half!) or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. A QCD transfers funds from your IRA directly to Mountain Watershed Association. The QCD can be excluded from your taxable income - up to $100,000 annually with some exceptions. If you are at least 73, your QCD may also be counted toward your required minimum distribution for the year. Check with your financial planner or tax advisor to see if this is a good option for you. Learn more about QCDs.
Gifts from a Donor-Advised Fund
The donor-advised fund (DAF) is growing in popularity as a charitable investment account with the purpose of supporting your favorite nonprofit organizations. Typically set up with a sponsor firm such as Fidelity Charitable, Vanguard, or Schwab, it can be funded with cash, securities, or other assets. Using appreciated assets to fund your DAF often avoids capital gains, while you still receive the full market value deduction.
Designate MWA as a Beneficiary
An impactful way to make a planned gift is to name MWA as a beneficiary of all or a percentage of your life insurance policy, retirement plan, investments, or bank accounts. This is a flexible option that allows you to use your account as long as needed. It can simplify your estate planning and potentially reduce taxes for your family. Contact your account manager to explore your options.
Include MWA in a Will or Revocable Trust
You can make a lasting impact without impacting your immediate finances. You will receive a federal estate tax deduction for 100% of the amount. It is a simple process to contribute a set dollar amount or percentage of your estate.
Sample Language:
“I give the sum of $________ (or ____ percentage of my estate) to the Mountain Watershed Association, Tax ID: 25-1730301, a nonprofit, charitable organization incorporated under the laws of Pennsylvania and presently having offices at 1414 Indian Creek Valley Road Melcroft, PA 15462, to be used for its general tax-exempt purposes ”
Gifts of Land
If you would like to explore the option of gifted real estate, please contact Taylor Robbins, MWA’s Conservation and Recreation Manager. The viability of this gift will be based on finding alignment between a landowner’s needs and desires as well as MWA’s priorities and capacity at the time of consideration.
