Books & Brews with Rolling Stone author Justin Nobel

May 19 @ 12:00 pm 2:00 pm

Rolling Stone’s Justin Nobel will lead a discussion about his new book “Petroleum-238: Big Oil’s Dangerous Secret and the Grassroots Fight to Stop It,” before signing copies at Bloom Brew in West Newton. He’ll be joined by a musical guest, and we recommend grabbing a tasty craft beverage from the brewery to enjoy during the discussion!

About the Book

An acclaimed science journalist’s extraordinary seven-year investigation into how the U.S. oil and gas industry has avoided environmental regulations and created a dangerous and radioactive public health crisis.

This book began as an investigation with Rolling Stone magazine that examined the radioactivity brought to the surface in oil and gas production and the various pathways of contamination posed to the
industry’s workers, the public and communities, and the environment. The magazine story was published in January 2020 and won an award for longform writing with the National Association of Science Writers, the book will be published April 24, 2024.

This book is an impressive work of investigative science journalism with surprising moments of literary beauty, and a welcome breakdown of the false wall corporations and politicians often set between industry workers and environmentalists. In the tradition of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Petroleum-238 is both a landmark work of environmental writing and an urgent call to action.

In a recent Rolling Stone article about Justin’s investigation, Melissa Troutman of Earthworks described radioactive oil and gas waste as “the way into the Death Star,” meaning it could upend the industry if the truth is uncovered. So by joining us to learn about it and support his work, you can do your part to support the journalists and community organizations resisting Big Oil’s lies and cover-ups.

“Petroleum-238: Big Oil’s Dangerous Secret and the Grassroots Fight to Stop It” is due out April 24, and can be pre-ordered now on Amazon or BookShop. Copies will be available for purchase at the signing or you can pre-order a copy through your local bookstore.
