Use Caution with Unsolicited Property Offers

Spam comes in many forms these days. Recently, community members have reported getting unsolicited land offers from random text messages, phone calls, and even handwritten letters. If you get a message like this, be careful!Ā

These offers aren’t from city folks looking to buy your house for a quiet country retreat. Rather, most unsolicited land offers are from big companies looking for cheap property to buy and flip. These companies cast a wide net generated from publicly available information on County Tax websites. They’re hoping to entice property owners into a quick sale.

What to do if someone wants to buy your land?

WeConservePA recently developed a resource that has additional steps to take when you are contacted about your property. WeConservePA states to proceed with caution when receiving unsolicited calls, texts or letters from real estate companies and investors:

  1. Research any potential buyer. Consider speaking with trusted local organizations and community members.
  2. Regard marketing materials and testimonials with healthy skepticism.
  3. Do not let anyone pressure or rush you into signing documents or selling. Communications of extreme urgency are a red flag.
  4. Keep copies of communications and read everything carefully if you decide to engage with an unsolicited buyer.
  5. Strongly consider reviewing agreements with an attorney before signing.
  6. Suspected predatory or fraudulent behavior may be reported to the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection
