2018: A Year In Review

Dear Friend of the Watershed,

THANK YOU for your generous support throughout the past year.  Our success is only possible because of your interest and commitment to our streams, rivers, and community quality of life.  Because of you it has been possible to:

  • Maintain our many mine drainage treatment sites and secure funding in the amount of $426,279 for renovation at the Gallantine system.
  • Pursue treatment at the Rondell-Correal mine drainage discharge. This discharge, one of the most challenging to treat in the entire state, is also the most degraded in the Indian Creek watershed.
  • Continue to advocate for sound stewardship practices with regard to shale gas activities and mining.
  • Protect the Youghiogheny River through our Yough Defense Series.
  • Establish a precedent setting agreement with a company deep mining in our community to protect the streams and quality of life by monitoring blasting, water leaving the site and entering Champion Creek, lighting, and barrier distance between this mine and the old Melcroft mine workings.
  • Retain our Swimmable Waters Program, sampling water at popular contact recreation sites and providing results on our website at theswimguide.org, and through text alerts.
  • Partner with local citizen’s group Protect Elizabeth Township to oppose construction of a gas-fired power plant along the Yough in Allegheny County.
  • Raise and use over $178,000 for Phase I of the Indian Creek Valley Trail in the spectacular Indian Creek Gorge.  In addition, we have raised another $40,000 towards Phase II, towards completion of the trail surface from Camp Christian to the Yough.
  • For more successes and stories from 2018, read our 2018 Annual Report.

Your donations to the Mountain Watershed Association are a powerful means for you to support the protection, preservation and restoration of the Indian Creek and greater Youghiogheny River watersheds.

Sincerely,
