Water Matters: Clean Water = Jobs & Recreation

Clean water is an incredibly important economic driver here in the Laurel Highlands region. Wilderness Voyageurs, the oldest rafting company on the east coast, is a top destination in the Youghiogheny River watershed. They offer a great variety of adventures to fulfill any adrenaline junkie’s needs– as well more relaxing choices. After speaking with the Operations Manager, Ben Scoville, it’s clear to see why nearly 14,000 people annually take advantage of the activities WV provides– including white water rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, mountain biking, and rock climbing.

People are clearly drawn to the natural beauty of the landscape around Ohiopyle.  While the landscape is clearly a hugely important part of the visitor experience, the foundation Wilderness Voyageurs is built on is clean water. They employ 130 individuals to keep up with the demand for the opportunities they offer; several of these staff members are in full-time, year-round positions. In the general Ohiopyle area, nearly 12 restaurants, 12 campgrounds, 13 hotel/bed and breakfasts, 11 shops and 4 other recreational businesses are also supported by the visitors who frequent the area. The Laurel Highlands is thriving because the economy is supported by the draw of clean water and the incredible landscape.

Polluted water is not aesthetically pleasing or safe to recreate in. Many people, including Ben, use the river as their outlet; a mental break from the cares of the world. If you are worried about the water around you being polluted or if you feel you are at risk of contracting an illness you would likely choose somewhere else to kayak or swim or raft or play. Because of the risks posed by recreating in polluted water, businesses like Wilderness Voyageurs recognize the economic importance of clean water to their bottom line– and as a result they actively work to protect the Yough.  When asked why clean water is important, Ben sums it up very simply: “It’s where we live and where we play.”

Wilderness Voyageurs plays a big part in helping to protect their clean water and the river. They advocate for the river, recycle extensively and wherever possible, and also host Mountain Watershed Association’s annual Yough Defense Party– the biggest fundraiser for our work in the Youghiogheny River watershed. Ben says WV tries to put their money where their mouth is in order to make an impact on their community, and this is certainly true in the great partnership we’ve forged with the company.
