MWA AmeriCorps Conservation and Outreach Member
This position is offered through the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps and is a 300-hour temporary position from May 22, 2026 – August 1, 2026. Member will serve at Mountain Watershed Association, 1414 Indian Creek Valley Road, Melcroft PA 15462.
Member will be expected to:
- Conduct water quality monitoring activities including treatment system monitoring, bacteria monitoring, biological surveys, etc.
- Manage bacteria lab and swimmable water program including volunteer recruitment, coordination and training
- Conduct maintenance activities at mine drainage treatment systems
- Conduct water quality data entry
- Attend staff meetings and outreach/conservation team meetings as needed
- Conduct trail maintenance or MWA property maintenance and monitoring
- Participate in fundraisers and outreach events such as local events, festival, fairs, etc for information tabling
- Coordinate and host Environmental Educational programs
- Attend orientation and other meetings as mandated by Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps.
Requirements:
- Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful permanent resident of the US
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, geology, education or related field or working towards a degree in these fields.
- Experience with public speaking, working with youth, providing environmental educational programs, and water quality monitoring preferred.
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and independent worker
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends, both in the office and in the field.
- Willingness to perform physical labor. Able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
- Experience with or willingness to learn safe use and maintenance of trail equipment like chainsaws, weed whackers, pruning clips, etc.
- Must have reliable transportation and willingness to travel when required including a valid driver’s license.
- Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Child Abuse, and FBI Clearances will be required for the selected candidate
Compensation: Member will be expected to serve 300 hours from May 22, 2026, to August 1, 2026. They will receive a biweekly $955 living stipend and upon successful completion of service they will earn a $1,565.08 education award that can be used for future education or to pay back student loans. Work environment:
- Indoor- 40%, data entry, reading bacteria samples, prepping sampling bottles, etc.
- Outdoor- 60%, treatment system monitoring and maintenance, swimmable waters, roadside springs sampling, land maintenance, environmental educational programming, etc.
