We’re presently accepting resumes for our AmeriCorps Volunteer position.  This position is offered through the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corporation and is a full-time temporary position from August 20, 2015 – August 12, 2016.

The Mountain Watershed Association works toward the protection, preservation and restoration of the Indian Creek and greater Youghiogheny River watersheds.  Our major purposes include bringing about remediation of the numerous abandoned mine discharges resulting from over 125 years of mining in the Indian Creek watershed and developing community awareness, promoting cooperative community efforts for stewardship and encouraging sound environmental practices throughout Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands region.

We are looking for an individual who enjoys working outside and wants to be challenged. Candidates who have completed their Bachelor’s degree or are working towards a degree in the environmental field are preferred. Experience working in the field and Microsoft Office proficiency requested. Flexible schedule is available; however some evening and weekends will be required on occasion.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct biological and chemical water quality monitoring.
  • Conduct routine maintenance activities at abandoned mine drainage treatment systems.
  • Manage the collection and analysis of datalogger data within the Indian Creek and Youghiogheny River watersheds.
  • Assist in the planning aspects and attend the annual Childrens’ Fishing Derby
  • Participate in outreach and educational activities throughout the Youghiogheny River watershed, including the development of educational programs and attending community events and festivals.
  • Manage MWA’s membership and volunteer lists and engage members and volunteers in events and volunteer opportunities.
  • Assist with the coordination of MWA’s Annual Clean Water Banquet.
  • Oversee and coordinate the membership
  • All other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, or related field. Course work in fields of ecology, biology, environmental disturbances, or related topics
  • Field experience, including physical, chemical, and biological water quality monitoring
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and independent worker
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel when required
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and a willingness to develop additional skills as needed.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Compensation

Living allowance of $12,530 distributed bi-weekly during the program year will be provided through the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps. In addition, a post service education award of $5,730 will be awarded when candidate meets all the terms of their agreement with Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps.
