SUMMARY:DEP Informal Public Conference: Rustic Ridge II Mine
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold an informal public conference on August 20 to take comments on LCT Energy’s Rustic Ridge II Deep Coal Mine permit applications. Community members and environmental groups will gather to voice concerns over potential impacts to water quality in the Laurel Highlands region.  \n\n\n\nThe hearing will take place on August 20 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church\, 164 School House Lane\, Donegal\, PA 15628. Department staff will be available to answer general questions on the permit applications and to receive both written and oral testimony regarding the applications.  \n\n\n\nRustic Ridge II is a new underground coal mine proposed by LCT Energy\, near the headwaters of Jacobs Creek\, a tributary to the Youghiogheny River. A mine portal and surface operation off of Claypike Road in Acme\, PA\, would be developed as part of this mine. LCT Energy currently operates the Rustic Ridge I coal mine\, which has been permitted to expand into the Four Mile Run watershed north of the turnpike.  \n\n\n\nIf approved\, Rustic Ridge II would allow LCT Energy to mine 2\,323 acres underground and build a 64.6-acre surface facility off Claypike Road. The project would permanently bury over 1\,700 feet of streams that are likely headwaters\, which feed Jacobs Creek\, as well as permanently filling over a half acre of the surrounding wetlands. It would also be permitted to pump out up to 2.8 million gallons of lower-quality mine water each day through three outfalls. LCT anticipates 850\,000 tons of coal would be extracted and hauled each year\, resulting in around 200 additional truck trips daily. The site is also projected to emit over 50 tons of air pollution annually\, adding to concerns about local health and air quality. \n\n\n\nMountain Watershed Association (MWA)\, a non-profit group based in Melcroft\, PA\, has already challenged the expansion of Rustic Ridge I. The organization is concerned that Rustic Ridge II could cause more water quality issues in the wider region. \n\n\n\nBased on the “Unsuitable for Mining” petition that MWA filed to protect several sensitive waterways in January 2024\, a new underground coal mine in the Laurel Highlands could have long-lasting environmental impacts that include: \n\n\n\n\nHarmful changes in stream flow and water temperature that could disrupt aquatic life\n\n\n\nMore acid mine drainage in an area already blighted by historic mine discharges\n\n\n\nDestruction of wetlands and prime farmland soil critical to agriculture\n\n\n\nEconomic loss from impacts to tourism\, property value\, and recreation\n\n\n\n\nMWA is hosting a community prep meeting on Tuesday\, August 12 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church. DESCRIPTION:The Melcroft Treatment System needs a little TLC! The system was installed in 2011 and is on the docket for a redesign (coming soon)! But until the redesign happens\, the system could use a sprucing up! \n\n\n\n– We need your help to pull out the Styrofoam that’s blocking the system (it’s heavier than it looks)\, replace some rails on the fence\, and trim up some brush! \n\n\n\n– This is a dirty job\, (but someone’s got to do it) so please be prepared to get dirty! There is potential for iron-oxide to get on you and your clothes\, so dress according! \n\n\n\n– We will provide gloves\, tools\, and PPE! (Volunteers should be 16 years of age or older) \n\n\n\n– We would also love to share the history and purpose of the Treatment System and let you see the system in action! \n\n\n\nThe Melcroft System supports a variety of wildlife\, especially as you make your way down the ponds (the further down the pond; the better the water quality). We have spotted geese\, hummingbirds\, redwing blackbirds\, tree swallows\, turtles\, frogs\, salamanders\, and even bobcat tracks\, just to name a few. Milkweed\, meadow variety wildflowers\, and jewelweed also support a vast array of pollinators! The beauty of these sightings is that this supporting habitat happened with little introduction on our part! Improve the water and they will come! \n\n\n\nFREE Pizza and Drinks will also be provided as a THANK YOU for your HELP! In search of why evermore single-use plastic debris enters the ocean despite all efforts to recycle\, we go upstream to where millions of tons of raw plastic are being made amidst the ruins of America’s bygone steel industry in Pennsylvania. Further upstream we see the economic and political realities that have boosted the new industry—realities reaching all the way to rural Louisiana where plans are laid to build the biggest plastic plant in the world. Can the powerful industry be persuaded to temper their production of single-use plastic? DESCRIPTION:The Youghiogheny Riverkeeper\, Eric Harder\, will give a presentation on plastic pollution and our “Nurdle Patrol” program in our watershed and region. Join us to learn about our work\, and how you can help out! \n\n\n\nAbout the presenter: \n\n\n\nEric Harder grew up in central Kansas\, but eventually made his way to the rivers of the east as a raft guide. Becoming a whitewater rafting guide was a turning point in his life. He eventually settled in Ohiopyle\, and the Youghiogheny River became his home stream. In 2017\, Eric became the Youghiogheny Riverkeeper to protect the Laurel Highlands. He conducts water sampling to track the source of pollution\, monitors permitted discharge points\, speaks for the river and the communities that depend on it\, and picks up lots of tires from the river. When he’s not working\, Eric kayaks\, coaches his kids’ soccer team\, and works on his house (which he built!) \n\n\n\nWhere: McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center \n\n\n\nWhen: 12 pm – 1:30 pm

DESCRIPTION:Kick off the spring with a relaxing\, informative nature hike on the Indian Creek Valley Trail!  \n\n\n\nLocal naturalists\, Josh Lawrey and Lisa Smith\, will guide us into the Indian Creek Valley Gorge and show us the natural wonders along the way! First\, we’ll look and listen for migrating and local birds with Josh\, our resident bird expert. Then we’ll walk further on the trail to appreciate the blooming spring ephemerals. \n\n\n\nThe walk will be an out-and-back of about 3-4 miles. You can turn around early\, or go even further!  \n\n\n\nBring binoculars if you have a pair\, but we’ll also have several sets available to borrow from the Outdoor Lending Library!  \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the Indian Creek Valley Trail parking area across from Camp Christian. Additional parking is available at the Showtime Trailhead Parking Area\, across Route 381.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Indian Creek Watershed Festival!\n \n\nMWA is excited to host our annual\, FREE Indian Creek Watershed Festival once again at CW Resh Park in Indian Head!\n \nPlease complete our virtual waiver if you’re planning to attend! These will also be available at registration. \n \n\nThis year we’re featuring vendors\, environmental education crafts and activities\, a Children’s Fishing Derby\, and the famous Duck Race!\nFor the Children’s Fishing Event\, we will be stocking approximately 300 trout the morning of the event. The fishing event is free of charge and includes lunch. Children up to and including 12 years of age are welcome to participate with adult supervision. We have a limited supply of children’s fishing rods\, so please bring your own rod and tackle if able!\nDuck Race tickets are $5.00 each with two chances to win per ticket! Must be at least 18 years of age to purchase. Ticket holders need not be present to win. Proceeds from the Duck Race benefit children’s fishing activities. To purchase tickets call 724-455-4200.\n\nCash Prizes for the Duck Race: \n\n1st Place— $500\n2nd Place—$250\n3rd Place —$150\n4th Place—$100\nLast Duck—$50\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBig Raffle Prizes!\n\nAll participants will be entered into a raffle for one of four childrens’ bikes\, generously donated by the Kona Bicycle Company and Wilderness Voyageurs!\nSmaller door prizes will be raffled as well!\n\n\n\n\nFood!\n\nKids eat free!
