No refunds\, your donation aids with continuing similar community workshops in the Youghiogheny River Watershed.*** \n\n\n\nRegister here!  \n\n\n\nWhy should I use a rain barrel?\n\n\n\nStormwater is water that does not infiltrate into the ground; it flows across the ground and impervious surfaces into streams\, rivers\, lakes\, etc.  \n\n\n\nInstalling rain barrels under downspouts is a low-cost way to reduce runoff. Rain barrels collect rainwater from rooftops during each rain event. The collected water can then be used around the landscape. You can use the water to water gardens and lawns\, clean garden tools\, fill fountains\, extinguish campfires\, etc. \n\n\n\nBenefits of using a rain barrel\n\n\n\n\nReduces runoff and non-point source pollution: Rain barrels will capture rainwater from the roof that would otherwise become runoff. Stormwater runoff picks up pollutants such as soil\, lawn fertilizers\, pesticides\, trash\, animal waste\, road salts\, chemicals\, etc. and transports them to waterways. These pollutants impair waterways and can harm aquatic life and human health.\n\n\n\nReduces erosion and flooding: Increased amounts of stormwater runoff increases erosion and flooding. Capturing some of the water will reduce velocity and peak flows.\n\n\n\nSaves drinking water resources and money: According to the US EPA\, 30% of daily water use is used outdoors. Using the rain barrel’s stored water around the landscape saves water resources and reduces the amount of water purchased from municipal sources.\n\n\n\nGood water source for plants: Rainwater is healthy for plants. It is often softer than tap water and does not contain chlorine.

The operation is proposed close to many water resources\, including Indian Creek\, the Mill Run Reservoir\, and countless private wells. SUMMARY:Fall Yough River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Watershed Association is dedicated to protecting the Youghiogheny River. One of our favorite ways to do that is by floating out on the Yough to clean up trash and tires in the river!  \n\n\n\nPark and meet us at the West Newton ballfield at 8:30\, and then we’ll shuttle to the put-in at Cedar Creek Park. From there\, we’ll hop into canoes and float down the river\, cleaning up tires and trash along the way. Time on the water will be about 2 hours.  \n\n\n\nBe prepared for an active day! MWA will provide trash bags and heavy gloves to protect your hands. Please wear clothing you can get wet and don’t mind getting dirty. Bring snacks\, sunscreen\, water\, and a waterproof bag\, if you have one.  \n\n\n\nIf you have your own boat\, you’re welcome to use it. Take your boat to Cedar Creek Park\, and then meet us at West Newton to check in\, so you can take advantage of the free shuttle!  \n\n\n\nAfter the cleanup\, join MWA staff at Bloom Brew – all volunteers (age 21+) get a free drink for their help! \n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:DEP Informal Public Conference: Rustic Ridge II Mine
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold an informal public conference on August 20 to take comments on LCT Energy’s Rustic Ridge II Deep Coal Mine permit applications. Community members and environmental groups will gather to voice concerns over potential impacts to water quality in the Laurel Highlands region.  \n\n\n\nThe hearing will take place on August 20 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church\, 164 School House Lane\, Donegal\, PA 15628. Department staff will be available to answer general questions on the permit applications and to receive both written and oral testimony regarding the applications.  \n\n\n\nRustic Ridge II is a new underground coal mine proposed by LCT Energy\, near the headwaters of Jacobs Creek\, a tributary to the Youghiogheny River. A mine portal and surface operation off of Claypike Road in Acme\, PA\, would be developed as part of this mine. LCT Energy currently operates the Rustic Ridge I coal mine\, which has been permitted to expand into the Four Mile Run watershed north of the turnpike.  \n\n\n\nIf approved\, Rustic Ridge II would allow LCT Energy to mine 2\,323 acres underground and build a 64.6-acre surface facility off Claypike Road. The project would permanently bury over 1\,700 feet of streams that are likely headwaters\, which feed Jacobs Creek\, as well as permanently filling over a half acre of the surrounding wetlands. It would also be permitted to pump out up to 2.8 million gallons of lower-quality mine water each day through three outfalls. LCT anticipates 850\,000 tons of coal would be extracted and hauled each year\, resulting in around 200 additional truck trips daily. The site is also projected to emit over 50 tons of air pollution annually\, adding to concerns about local health and air quality. \n\n\n\nMountain Watershed Association (MWA)\, a non-profit group based in Melcroft\, PA\, has already challenged the expansion of Rustic Ridge I. The organization is concerned that Rustic Ridge II could cause more water quality issues in the wider region. \n\n\n\nBased on the “Unsuitable for Mining” petition that MWA filed to protect several sensitive waterways in January 2024\, a new underground coal mine in the Laurel Highlands could have long-lasting environmental impacts that include: \n\n\n\n\nHarmful changes in stream flow and water temperature that could disrupt aquatic life\n\n\n\nMore acid mine drainage in an area already blighted by historic mine discharges\n\n\n\nDestruction of wetlands and prime farmland soil critical to agriculture\n\n\n\nEconomic loss from impacts to tourism\, property value\, and recreation\n\n\n\n\nMWA is hosting a community prep meeting on Tuesday\, August 12 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church. DESCRIPTION:On August 20\, PA DEP is holding a public hearing regarding the permit review for the Rustic Ridge 2 Deep Mine\, a new 2\,300 acre development proposed in Donegal and Mount Pleasant Townships. In search of why evermore single-use plastic debris enters the ocean despite all efforts to recycle\, we go upstream to where millions of tons of raw plastic are being made amidst the ruins of America’s bygone steel industry in Pennsylvania. Further upstream we see the economic and political realities that have boosted the new industry—realities reaching all the way to rural Louisiana where plans are laid to build the biggest plastic plant in the world. Can the powerful industry be persuaded to temper their production of single-use plastic? SUMMARY:Family Field Day at Laurel Hill State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second annual Family Field Day at Laurel Hill State Park! \n\n\n\nWhen? Saturday\, June 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere? Laurel Hill State Park\, Willis Pavilion (near the swimming beach) \n\n\n\nWhat? A free day of outdoor activities\, fishing\, and boating for the whole family! All materials and equipment provided by Mountain Watershed Association. \n\n\n\nThis family-friendly\, outdoor event\, funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Education Grant\, is free and open to the public. MWA and the park rangers at Laurel Hill State Park will provide a full day of fun\, educational experiences to our local families. \n\n\n\nThe Field Day will be held at the Willis Pavilion at Laurel Hill State Park\, near the beach swimming area. Activities will be dispersed along the crushed-limestone Copper Kettle walking trail that runs along the lake.  \n\n\n\nSchedule: \n\n\n\n10:00 – 10:30 a.m. – Registration \n\n\n\n10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Birds and Trees \n\n\n\n10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Paddling 101 \n\n\n\n11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Lunch \n\n\n\n12:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Birds and Trees \n\n\n\n12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Paddling 101 \n\n\n\nAll-day Activities: All About Seeds\, Bird Atlas\, Seed Pods\, Pine Cone Bird Feeder\, AMD Tie Dye\, Fish Printing\, Stream Exploring\, Fishing\, Canoeing\, and Kayaking. These ongoing art and nature activities will be in and around the pavilion\, and free fishing lessons are located near the dam. \n\n\n\nPlease bring: something white to tie dye\, snacks\, lunch\, water\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, a change of clothes\, swimsuits\, towels\, appropriate footwear for hiking or being on the lake\, and money for the concession stand. \n\n\n\nEmail Lindsey@mtwatershed.com to sign up or simply stop by and see us on Saturday!  \n\n\n\nThere is a full service concession stand beside the lake\, but MWA can provide a limited number of bagged lunches. If you need support with feeding the family\, please let us know when you register.  \n\n\n\nPlease note\, as of 6/13/2024\, the limited number of lunches MWA was able to provide have been spoken for\, please plan ahead to bring your own lunch or swing by the concession stand.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing group hike on the Indian Creek Valley Trail this summer! These walks occur every Tuesday at 6:30 pm on a different section of the trail. The terrain is flat and non-technical\, so you don’t need any special gear (although we do recommend wearing bug spray and bringing water)! Each walk is 1-4 miles long. Most of them are in an out-and-back format\, so you can head back whenever you like!  \n\n\n\nJoin five or more walks\, and earn some ICV Trail gear! \n\n\n\nCheck out the list of locations below!
