DESCRIPTION:We’re deeply bummed to have to cancel this event! Unfortunately high flows and upcoming summer storms have made it unfeasible to pull tires this weekend. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDo you live\, fish\, paddle\, or play along the Youghiogheny River between West Newton and Buena Vista? Are you sick of seeing tires on the bottom of the river? Then help us get them out!  \n\n\n\n* For experienced paddlers only! * \n\n\n\nMWA and Three Rivers Waterkeeper have arranged for tire pickup and disposal. We just need you (and your boat) to help us pull tires and stack them on the banks!  \n\n\n\n\nWhere can I park?\n\nWell-marked take-out parking will be provided at a community member’s property in Industry\, PA\n\n\n\nSet your own shuttle\n\n\n\nYou may start and end at any legal parking area \n\n\n\n\n\nWhere to put the tires?\n\nTire-stacking locations will be marked (spray-painted tires)\n\n\n\nDesignated volunteers will pick up tires at the end of the day\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s the best boat?\n\nMotor boats are the most efficient for moving tires\n\n\n\nCanoes also work well\n\n\n\nWe do not recommend sit-on-top kayaks or SUP boards\n\n\n\n\n\nAre there guides?\n\nNo! This is a self-guided activity\n\n\n\nBring your own boat\, food\, water\, and first aid kit\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou don’t want to lose your tires in the river! We strongly recommend unloading your tires at Sutersville Boat Launch so you don’t tip over in the rapid downstream or using the stockpile locations along the river when you’re full. \n\n\n\nMWA and Three Rivers Waterkeeper staff will be on the water\, but we are not providing guiding services. Please paddle at your own risk.

SUMMARY:DEP Public Hearing: Rustic Ridge 2 Mine
DESCRIPTION:PA DEP is holding a public hearing regarding the discharge permit (NPDES) for the proposed Rustic Ridge 2 Deep Mine\, a 2\,300 acre development proposed in Donegal and Mount Pleasant Townships.  \n\n\n\nDEP wants to hear your concerns! \n\n\n\nGather with your neighbors to ask questions\, learn about the mine’s potential impacts\, and get your concerns on record with the agency.  \n\n\n\nWhat is a NPDES Permit?A NPDES Permit is required for any “point source” discharge of water pollution (that’s a source from a specific area that can be identified). Coal mines need to have water pumped out\, treated\, and discharged\, which requires a NPDES permit. \n\n\n\nWhy should I be concerned? \n\n\n\nThis mine is proposed to have two discharges on tributaries of Jacobs Creek. More than 1700 feet of stream will be destroyed or buried according to the plan. We urge area residents to attend this hearing to help protect our water\, property value\, and quality of life in the Laurel Highlands. \n\n\n\nThose who wish to provide testimony at the hearing are required to register 24 hours in advance by emailing laquiline@pa.gov or by calling 412-442-4311. DEP requests that those providing oral testimony submit a written copy of their comments to lorjenkins@pa.gov  following the hearing. \n\n\n\nThe California District Mining Office will accept additional written comments two weeks after the date of the hearing\, putting the deadline for written comments at June 30th. SUMMARY:Birds & Blooms Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Mountain Watershed Association in the Indian Creek Valley Gorge for a stroll on the Indian Creek Valley Trail\, where expert birders and botanists will show you the wonders of this unique ecosystem in the springtime! \n\n\n\nWe’ll walk from the Camp Christian parking lot\, past the reservoir\, and into the gorge. You’ll hear a wide variety of bird species and see plenty of native wildflowers blooming along the trail.  \n\n\n\nThe walk will be 2-3 miles long. Please dress for the weather\, wear comfortable shoes\, and bring binoculars if you have them! MWA has a limited number of binoculars and field guides to share.  \n\n\n\nNew this year! For folks interested in a quieter\, small-group birding experience\, arrive at 7:00 am to take in the morning chorus for a while before the larger group arrives.  \n\n\n\nSchedule:  \n\n\n\n7 am – 8 am – Optional quiet birding hour (a smaller session for folks who want to really exercise their listening skills!) \n\n\n\n8 am – 9 am – Beginner birding (for the bird-curious!) Learn about local and migratory birds that are fluttering around our forests in the springtime.  \n\n\n\n9 am – 10 am – As the group travels into the Indian Creek Gorge\, our naturalists will point out native flowers blooming along the trail. Learn why these plants are essential to our ecosystem as a whole\, and how we can protect them by removing invasive species that crowd out native plants.

No refunds\, your donation aids with continuing similar community workshops in the Youghiogheny River Watershed.*** \n\n\n\nRegister here!  \n\n\n\nWhy should I use a rain barrel?\n\n\n\nStormwater is water that does not infiltrate into the ground; it flows across the ground and impervious surfaces into streams\, rivers\, lakes\, etc.  \n\n\n\nInstalling rain barrels under downspouts is a low-cost way to reduce runoff. Rain barrels collect rainwater from rooftops during each rain event. The collected water can then be used around the landscape. You can use the water to water gardens and lawns\, clean garden tools\, fill fountains\, extinguish campfires\, etc. \n\n\n\nBenefits of using a rain barrel\n\n\n\n\nReduces runoff and non-point source pollution: Rain barrels will capture rainwater from the roof that would otherwise become runoff. Stormwater runoff picks up pollutants such as soil\, lawn fertilizers\, pesticides\, trash\, animal waste\, road salts\, chemicals\, etc. and transports them to waterways. These pollutants impair waterways and can harm aquatic life and human health.\n\n\n\nReduces erosion and flooding: Increased amounts of stormwater runoff increases erosion and flooding. Capturing some of the water will reduce velocity and peak flows.\n\n\n\nSaves drinking water resources and money: According to the US EPA\, 30% of daily water use is used outdoors. Using the rain barrel’s stored water around the landscape saves water resources and reduces the amount of water purchased from municipal sources.\n\n\n\nGood water source for plants: Rainwater is healthy for plants. It is often softer than tap water and does not contain chlorine.

SUMMARY:Fall Yough River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Watershed Association is dedicated to protecting the Youghiogheny River. One of our favorite ways to do that is by floating out on the Yough to clean up trash and tires in the river!  \n\n\n\nPark and meet us at the West Newton ballfield at 8:30\, and then we’ll shuttle to the put-in at Cedar Creek Park. From there\, we’ll hop into canoes and float down the river\, cleaning up tires and trash along the way. Time on the water will be about 2 hours.  \n\n\n\nBe prepared for an active day! MWA will provide trash bags and heavy gloves to protect your hands. Please wear clothing you can get wet and don’t mind getting dirty. Bring snacks\, sunscreen\, water\, and a waterproof bag\, if you have one.  \n\n\n\nIf you have your own boat\, you’re welcome to use it. Take your boat to Cedar Creek Park\, and then meet us at West Newton to check in\, so you can take advantage of the free shuttle!  \n\n\n\nAfter the cleanup\, join MWA staff at Bloom Brew – all volunteers (age 21+) get a free drink for their help! \n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:DEP Informal Public Conference: Rustic Ridge II Mine
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold an informal public conference on August 20 to take comments on LCT Energy’s Rustic Ridge II Deep Coal Mine permit applications. Community members and environmental groups will gather to voice concerns over potential impacts to water quality in the Laurel Highlands region.  \n\n\n\nThe hearing will take place on August 20 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church\, 164 School House Lane\, Donegal\, PA 15628. Department staff will be available to answer general questions on the permit applications and to receive both written and oral testimony regarding the applications.  \n\n\n\nRustic Ridge II is a new underground coal mine proposed by LCT Energy\, near the headwaters of Jacobs Creek\, a tributary to the Youghiogheny River. A mine portal and surface operation off of Claypike Road in Acme\, PA\, would be developed as part of this mine. LCT Energy currently operates the Rustic Ridge I coal mine\, which has been permitted to expand into the Four Mile Run watershed north of the turnpike.  \n\n\n\nIf approved\, Rustic Ridge II would allow LCT Energy to mine 2\,323 acres underground and build a 64.6-acre surface facility off Claypike Road. The project would permanently bury over 1\,700 feet of streams that are likely headwaters\, which feed Jacobs Creek\, as well as permanently filling over a half acre of the surrounding wetlands. It would also be permitted to pump out up to 2.8 million gallons of lower-quality mine water each day through three outfalls. LCT anticipates 850\,000 tons of coal would be extracted and hauled each year\, resulting in around 200 additional truck trips daily. The site is also projected to emit over 50 tons of air pollution annually\, adding to concerns about local health and air quality. \n\n\n\nMountain Watershed Association (MWA)\, a non-profit group based in Melcroft\, PA\, has already challenged the expansion of Rustic Ridge I. The organization is concerned that Rustic Ridge II could cause more water quality issues in the wider region. \n\n\n\nBased on the “Unsuitable for Mining” petition that MWA filed to protect several sensitive waterways in January 2024\, a new underground coal mine in the Laurel Highlands could have long-lasting environmental impacts that include: \n\n\n\n\nHarmful changes in stream flow and water temperature that could disrupt aquatic life\n\n\n\nMore acid mine drainage in an area already blighted by historic mine discharges\n\n\n\nDestruction of wetlands and prime farmland soil critical to agriculture\n\n\n\nEconomic loss from impacts to tourism\, property value\, and recreation\n\n\n\n\nMWA is hosting a community prep meeting on Tuesday\, August 12 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church. In search of why evermore single-use plastic debris enters the ocean despite all efforts to recycle\, we go upstream to where millions of tons of raw plastic are being made amidst the ruins of America’s bygone steel industry in Pennsylvania. Further upstream we see the economic and political realities that have boosted the new industry—realities reaching all the way to rural Louisiana where plans are laid to build the biggest plastic plant in the world. Can the powerful industry be persuaded to temper their production of single-use plastic?
