SUMMARY:Birds & Blooms Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Mountain Watershed Association in the Indian Creek Valley Gorge for a stroll on the Indian Creek Valley Trail\, where expert birders and botanists will show you the wonders of this unique ecosystem in the springtime! \n\n\n\nWe’ll walk from the Camp Christian parking lot\, past the reservoir\, and into the gorge. You’ll hear a wide variety of bird species and see plenty of native wildflowers blooming along the trail.  \n\n\n\nThe walk will be 2-3 miles long. Please dress for the weather\, wear comfortable shoes\, and bring binoculars if you have them! MWA has a limited number of binoculars and field guides to share.  \n\n\n\nNew this year! For folks interested in a quieter\, small-group birding experience\, arrive at 7:00 am to take in the morning chorus for a while before the larger group arrives. \n\n\n\nSchedule: \n\n\n\n7 am – 8 am – Optional quiet birding hour (a smaller session for folks who want to really exercise their listening skills!) \n\n\n\n8 am – 9 am – Beginner birding (for the bird-curious!) Learn about local and migratory birds that are fluttering around our forests in the springtime. \n\n\n\n9 am – 10 am – As the group travels into the Indian Creek Gorge\, our naturalists will point out native flowers blooming along the trail. Learn why these plants are essential to our ecosystem as a whole\, and how we can protect them by removing invasive species that crowd out native plants.

But are they seeing a positive side-effect of climate change in the Arctic\, or witnessing the end of innocence for Svalbard reindeer? Director: Morgan Elizabeth Heim  \n\n\n\nFrom Dirt (10:38) Agnes Vianzon has built the Eastern Sierra Conservation Corp to change the lives of the marginalized communities it serves. Challenged by the rugged working conditions\, corp-members transform through a season of life\, living on the land and in community. Life is never quite the same afterwards. Director: Sam Fish  \n\n\n\nThe First Traverse (7:11) The First Traverse is a short film reimagining the first female traverse of the Presidential mountain range in winter. It stars renowned New England environmentalist\, writer\, and mountaineer\, Laura Waterman\, and recounts her epic trek—what she saw\, heard\, and felt—along those 19 miles and 8\,000 feet of New Hampshire granite and snow. Through interviews with Waterman\, now in her ’80s\, and present-day visuals recreating her traverse\, The First Traverse pays homage to Laura’s work and efforts in exploring and protecting the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Director: Chris Shane  \n\n\n\nMountain Guides: Barometers of Change (7:08) Angela Hawse is one of few women IFMGA mountain guides in the world. Over her 35 year career\, she has witnessed dramatic change in the mountains due to climate change. This is her story with the backdrop of a ski mountaineering expedition she led in Svalbard in May 2025. This project was a collaboration between Protect Our Winters\, Black Diamond Equipment and Polar Bears International. Director: Chris Shane WILDEST ADVENTURE AWARD\, 2026  \n\n\n\nIikaiksimatsa’pao’p: Grateful To Be On The Land (12:38) Iikaiksimatsa’pao’p (Grateful to Be on the Land) follows Cassie Ayoungman\, founder of Soul of Miistaki and member of the Siksika nation\, on her journey to bring the healing power of the mountains to those within her community. Breaking down barriers to climbing\, and integrating Indigenous teachings and land-based learning\, she raises questions about representation\, builds community\, and redefines what it means to be on the land. Director + Writer: Trevor Solway  \n\n\n\nIn Her Nature – All You Need Is Love…and Lemurs (22:01) Greater Bamboo lemurs\, recently thought to be extinct\, are critically endangered. One Malagasy woman is on a mission to restore lemur populations while also helping local communities thrive by focusing on one resource: bamboo.  \n\n\n\nIn the world’s wildest places\, In Her Nature follows the women at the forefront of global conservation efforts. Through the lens of an all-female film crew\, the series reveals rare wildlife behaviors and uplifting success stories that prove hope is alive in even the most threatened ecosystems. Director + Writer: Katie Schuler  \n\n\n\nMother River (6:34) A look into Devin Brown’s journey as she seeks to be the First black female on record to kayak the entire Mississippi River. Director: Jeremiah Schuster  \n\n\n\nEmbers (23:50) On July 24\, 2024\, a wildfire tore through Jasper\, Alberta\, reducing aerialist Sasha Galitzki’s home to ashes. Embers connects Sasha’s loss in the wildfire and the glacial recession she has witnessed in her creative work to highlight their common cause: climate change.  \n\n\n\nSet in the year following the fire\, Embers follows Sasha as she rebuilds her life and confronts the realities of a warming world. Speaking with wildfire and climate experts\, she seeks to understand the heartbreaking changes affecting the mountains and community she loves. Gradually returning to her aerial practice\, she performs over the ashes of her home and amidst the whirling winds of melting glaciers—inviting us on an intimate journey to find hope out of darkness.  \n\n\n\nEmbers ultimately captures a profound shift within Sasha\, who channels her grief and art into a powerful and visually impactful message of environmental advocacy. SUMMARY:Mt Pleasant Rain Barrel Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join MWA for a stormwater workshop at the Mt Pleasant Library! Learn how to install your brand new 50-gallon rain barrel! \n\n\n\n***One barrel per participant and household\, must be present for workshop for rain barrel pick-up. No refunds\, your donation aids with continuing similar community workshops in the Youghiogheny River Watershed.*** \n\n\n\nRegister here! \n\n\n\nWhy should I use a rain barrel?\n\n\n\nStormwater is water that does not infiltrate into the ground; it flows across the ground and impervious surfaces into streams\, rivers\, lakes\, etc.  \n\n\n\nInstalling rain barrels under downspouts is a low-cost way to reduce runoff. Rain barrels collect rainwater from rooftops during each rain event. The collected water can then be used around the landscape. You can use the water to water gardens and lawns\, clean garden tools\, fill fountains\, extinguish campfires\, etc. \n\n\n\nBenefits of using a rain barrel\n\n\n\n\nReduces runoff and non-point source pollution: Rain barrels will capture rainwater from the roof that would otherwise become runoff. Stormwater runoff picks up pollutants such as soil\, lawn fertilizers\, pesticides\, trash\, animal waste\, road salts\, chemicals\, etc. and transports them to waterways. These pollutants impair waterways and can harm aquatic life and human health.\n\n\n\nReduces erosion and flooding: Increased amounts of stormwater runoff increases erosion and flooding. Capturing some of the water will reduce velocity and peak flows.\n\n\n\nSaves drinking water resources and money: According to the US EPA\, 30% of daily water use is used outdoors. Using the rain barrel’s stored water around the landscape saves water resources and reduces the amount of water purchased from municipal sources.\n\n\n\nGood water source for plants: Rainwater is healthy for plants. It is often softer than tap water and does not contain chlorine.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting: Jim Mountain Road Well Pad
DESCRIPTION:Proposed Kooser Road Unconventional Well Pad in Springfield Township \n\n\n\nThere is a pending permit review for an unconventional shale gas well proposed on Jim Mountain Road\, Springfield Township\, called “Tanta Bella 1.” This application\, submitted to the PA DEP by PH Masterline\, is for the development of a well pad at 375 Jim Mountain Road\, and 3 miles of boring from the well pad to beyond Clay Pike Road.Drilling would take place along the Utica Shale formation at a total vertical depth of over 15\,000 feet. The operation is proposed close to many water resources\, including Indian Creek\, the Mill Run Reservoir\, and countless private wells. Shale gas extraction poses serious risks to water quality\, air quality and public health. To share knowledge about the proposed well pad and to learn more about community concerns\, Mountain Watershed Association is hosting a community meeting! SUMMARY:DEP Informal Public Conference: Rustic Ridge II Mine
DESCRIPTION:The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will hold an informal public conference on August 20 to take comments on LCT Energy’s Rustic Ridge II Deep Coal Mine permit applications. Community members and environmental groups will gather to voice concerns over potential impacts to water quality in the Laurel Highlands region.  \n\n\n\nThe hearing will take place on August 20 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church\, 164 School House Lane\, Donegal\, PA 15628. Department staff will be available to answer general questions on the permit applications and to receive both written and oral testimony regarding the applications.  \n\n\n\nRustic Ridge II is a new underground coal mine proposed by LCT Energy\, near the headwaters of Jacobs Creek\, a tributary to the Youghiogheny River. A mine portal and surface operation off of Claypike Road in Acme\, PA\, would be developed as part of this mine. LCT Energy currently operates the Rustic Ridge I coal mine\, which has been permitted to expand into the Four Mile Run watershed north of the turnpike.  \n\n\n\nIf approved\, Rustic Ridge II would allow LCT Energy to mine 2\,323 acres underground and build a 64.6-acre surface facility off Claypike Road. The project would permanently bury over 1\,700 feet of streams that are likely headwaters\, which feed Jacobs Creek\, as well as permanently filling over a half acre of the surrounding wetlands. It would also be permitted to pump out up to 2.8 million gallons of lower-quality mine water each day through three outfalls. LCT anticipates 850\,000 tons of coal would be extracted and hauled each year\, resulting in around 200 additional truck trips daily. The site is also projected to emit over 50 tons of air pollution annually\, adding to concerns about local health and air quality. \n\n\n\nMountain Watershed Association (MWA)\, a non-profit group based in Melcroft\, PA\, has already challenged the expansion of Rustic Ridge I. The organization is concerned that Rustic Ridge II could cause more water quality issues in the wider region. \n\n\n\nBased on the “Unsuitable for Mining” petition that MWA filed to protect several sensitive waterways in January 2024\, a new underground coal mine in the Laurel Highlands could have long-lasting environmental impacts that include: \n\n\n\n\nHarmful changes in stream flow and water temperature that could disrupt aquatic life\n\n\n\nMore acid mine drainage in an area already blighted by historic mine discharges\n\n\n\nDestruction of wetlands and prime farmland soil critical to agriculture\n\n\n\nEconomic loss from impacts to tourism\, property value\, and recreation\n\n\n\n\nMWA is hosting a community prep meeting on Tuesday\, August 12 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church. The public is invited to learn how to organize comments to DEP. \n\n\n\nPlease call or email Lori Jenkins at 724-769-1023 or lorjenkins@pa.gov to inquire about electronic application review options or with other questions.  \n\n\n\nThe California District Mining Office will accept additional written comments two weeks after the date of the proceeding until September 4\, 2025. \n\n\n\nDEP MEETING DETAILS: \n\n\n\nSt. Raymond of the Mountains Church; 164 School House Ln\, Donegal\, PA \n\n\n\nDEP Informal Public Conference Rustic Ridge II Coal Mine: August 20 at 6:00 pm

SUMMARY:Community Prep Meeting: Rustic Ridge II Public Comment
DESCRIPTION:On August 20\, PA DEP is holding a public hearing regarding the permit review for the Rustic Ridge 2 Deep Mine\, a new 2\,300 acre development proposed in Donegal and Mount Pleasant Townships. DEP wants to know your thoughts and concerns! \n\n\n\nThis meeting is an opportunity to better understand this proposed mine and gather with your neighbors. It’s VERY important to join together as a community and get your questions and concerns on record with the agency. \n\n\n\n**Join Mountain Watershed Association for a Community Prep Meeting on Tuesday\, August 12 at 6:00 pm at Saint Raymond of the Mountains Church.** \n\n\n\nAttend to learn how to organize your comments to DEP! \n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nBackground: Rustic Ridge 2 is a new underground coal mine proposed by LCT Energy. A portal and surface operation off of Claypike Road would be developed as part of this mine. This is in addition to LCT’s existing Rustic Ridge 1 coal mine and adjoining expansion. \n\n\n\nThis mine is proposed near the headwaters of Jacobs Creek. Some members of our community have reported property damage and water loss from the current operations at Rustic Ridge 1\, which has been active since 2018. \n\n\n\nWe urge area residents to help protect our water\, property value\, and quality of life in the Laurel Highlands. Please attend both meetings to be informed and take action! \n\n\n\nNeed more information? Please reach out! \n\n\n\nStacey@mtwatershed.com | 724-455-4200 #9

SUMMARY:"Single Use Planet" Screening
DESCRIPTION:A search for the true headwaters of plastic entering the ocean finds more than it bargained for. \n\n\n\nMountain Watershed Association and Three Rivers Waterkeeper are teaming up to bring you the critically acclaimed documentary “Single Use Planet\,” outside at 3 Rivers Outdoor Co! \n\n\n\nAbout the film: Plastic is vital in so many ways to our modern way of life and well-being—but not all forms of it. In search of why evermore single-use plastic debris enters the ocean despite all efforts to recycle\, we go upstream to where millions of tons of raw plastic are being made amidst the ruins of America’s bygone steel industry in Pennsylvania. Further upstream we see the economic and political realities that have boosted the new industry—realities reaching all the way to rural Louisiana where plans are laid to build the biggest plastic plant in the world. Can the powerful industry be persuaded to temper their production of single-use plastic? Our search leads to Washington D.C. and finally to France. \n\n\n\nSchedule of events: \n\n\n\n7:00 pm: Come hang out for beer-by-donation\, plastic-free crafts\, educational activities\, and screen print a bandana with 3 Rivers Waterkeeper’s new design!7:30pm: Q&A session with Mountain Watershed Association and 3 Rivers Waterkeeper\, on our regional nurdle patrol program8:00: Film screening begins \n\n\n\nImportant Details: \n\n\n\nBeer is available by donation at 3 Rivers Outdoor Co\, and there are lots of nearby restaurants if you want to get take-out and bring it over. Our community has fought hard (and spent millions of dollars) to clean up Abandoned Mine Discharges in our waters\, and we don’t want to do it again. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the mine expansion\, and what you can do to protect your property and safeguard clean water in the Laurel Highlands! Dinner and information hand-outs will be provided. \n\n\n\nJoin in-person\, or online at this zoom link.
